Beat the Heat with Summer Family Fun

As summer approaches and the temperature rises, finding ways to beat the heat becomes a top priority for families. Don’t let the scorching sun dampen your spirits; instead, embrace the warmth and make the most of your summer days with these run and refreshing family activities.

Here at Children’s Lighthouse, our summer curriculum brings all the best aspects of summer fun into the classrooms while children are still exploring and learning. During the summer, teachers will continue to reinforce the skills they learned during the year in a variety of fun-in-the-sun activities. Children will continue to work on phonics, literacy, creativity, mathematics, and other content areas while enjoying the best activities involving water, sand, sun, and other fun aspects of the Summer!

While the children enjoy the best of summer inside the classroom, families can enjoy this time together as well. From water adventures to indoor escapes, here are some exciting ideas to ensure your family has a blast while staying cool when it’s hot outside.

  • Indoor Science Experiments:
    • When the heat becomes unbearable, head indoors and engage in some fascinating science experiments. Conduct simple experiments like making homemade ice cream or seeing what reacts to a magnet. These activities continue your child’s learning and curiosity with science while giving some relief from the heat.
  • Go to the Library:
    • Not only does the library provide AC, but it provides a fantastic world of books and literacy for your child to enjoy! Many local libraries also host little activities throughout the summer to give families fun activities for free. Going on a trip to the library will get the kids out of the house, inside where it is cool, but opens up their minds to magical worlds far, far away at the same time.
  • Cooking and Baking as a Family:
    • Engage the entire family in culinary adventures by trying out new recipes together. From homemade popsicles to refreshing fruit salads, there are plenty of delicious treats that can be prepared with minimal heat in the kitchen. Encourage everyone to participate and enjoy the results as a family.
  • Visit a museum:
    • When it is too hot to be outside, spend the day exploring a local museum or an indoor activity center. These places offer a break from the heat while offering a wealth of knowledge, entertainment, and interactive experiences. Whether it is a children’s museum, art gallery, or science center, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and learn from.
  • Evening Outdoor Fun:
    • Make the most of the cooler evenings by engaging in outdoor activities once the sun starts to set. Organize a “friends and family” game of flashlight tag, set up a campfire in the backyard with a tent, or simply drive out to look at the stars. The mild evening temperatures will allow for enjoyable outdoor experiences without the discomfort of the scorching sun.
  • Backyard Water Fun:
    • No need to venture far from home when you can turn your backyard into a water wonderland. Set up sprinklers, water balloons, or a small inflatable pool. Let the kids run through the sprinklers, engage in epic water balloon fights, or splash around in the pool. These simple activities will keep your child engaged while keeping everyone cool at the same time.

Hot summer days need not be a hindrance to family fun. By embracing the heat and exploring these refreshing ideas, you can create lasting memories while staying cool. The key is to spend quality time together and make the most of the summer season. So, beat the heat and create an unforgettable summer for your family with these fun and refreshing ideas!
