cou • rage     noun
the ability to do something that frightens one; strength in the face of pain or grief
synonyms: bravery, pluck, valor, daring, audacity, boldness, grit
Let's take a closer look at this character trait. It's simple in concept, but are you practicing it on a regular basis? I sometimes find myself avoiding things that I am afraid of, but then my courageous inner voice commands my attention and I face what frightens me. I have found that the more I face my fears, less fears comes into my life. This is equally true when it comes to children and their still-developing responses to fear.
Fear is the natural emotional response to danger that biologically exists to protect us. Unfortunately, many parents are guilty of "bubble-wrapping" their children so that they do not know how to deal with fear in a healthy manner. Children can learn to be courageous when there are adults in their lives modeling the character value of courage. The best way adults can model a courageous spirit is to talk out loud about their little fears when children are present. You’ll notice that I said LITTLE fears – it’s still necessary to protect children from our adult fears when possible because their minds cannot process stress the same way that adults can. Teaching children to face their fears and develop courage is proven to be beneficial in many ways. Research shows that courageous children are better equipped to withstand peer pressure and have healthier emotional development.

My little German grandmother taught me how to face my fear of thunder when I was a little girl. When thunder came rolling in, she would tell me how she faced her fear of thunder. She would close her eyes, take a deep breath, and say "I know the loud bangs sound scary, but I know I am safe in the house, so I just pretend the sound is from giants bowling in the heavens." She would open her eyes, show me a big smile, and continue on her way in peace. My grandmother helped me to develop healthy coping skills in the face of fear. She showed me how to be courageous in a creative way in the midst of my childish fear.
