Set Sail: Celebrate National Pirate's Day!
By Dr. Kristi Smith, D.Ed., M.Ed.   •   September 12, 2024

Ahoy, mateys! Ready to shiver your timbers and set sail on a swashbuckling adventure? Yo Ho Ho! What lad or lass wouldn’t love a themed family event while talking like a pirate on National Pirate’s Day (September 19th)? Batten down the hatches without spending much booty from your coffer and channel your inner buccaneer. Random, non-traditional holidays can make a life-long impression on children when the adults in their lives engage in play acts with their children.

At Children’s Lighthouse, we know educational research has shown children learn at a deeper level when they are immersed in theme-based activities. They spark the imagination and harness curiosity & wonder while drawing children into deeper engagement. Not only do thematic events create lasting memories and knowledge retention, but they help children make deeper connections in learning domains. This is especially true in areas, such as math or literacy, that they might not otherwise be interested in. The Children’s Lighthouse Pathways® Approach To Learning features monthly themes, year-round, for all ages in our early learning schools. Children and teachers alike have fun through play-based skill development. Theme-based learning truly supports different learning needs as children learn about the world, past and present.

Theme-based fun doesn’t need to be limited only to schools. Families can weigh anchor and hoist the sail at home. National Pirate Day is just around the corner, and there’s no better way to celebrate than by transforming your family into a crew of daring pirates. Grab your eye patches, dust off that treasure map, and prepare for a day of high-seas hilarity with these clever and fun-filled family activities. Here are some theme-based ideas for memory-making fun:

1. Pillage for Pirate Costumes
Set sail with costumes that would make even Captain Jack Sparrow envious. Pillage your closets for anything remotely piratey—think striped shirts, bandanas, and old-fashioned vests. Loot the crafting bins and closets for scraps to make creative eye patches, homemade hooks, and parrot sidekicks (stuffed or real—if you can manage). As you parlay over the best-dressed pirate, remember: the more exaggerated the accent, the better the chance of winning the title of “Best Pirate in the Family.”

2. Treasure Hunt Extravaganza
No pirate day is complete without a treasure hunt! Create a treasure map leading to hidden loot—gold coins, candy, or small toys—around your home or backyard. For older lassies, set up clues and riddles that would challenge even the most seasoned buccaneer. The thrill of the hunt, combined with the promise of treasure, will keep everyone on their toes and eager for the next clue. Be sure to give each participant a pirate name; after all, “Swashbuckling Sally” and “Rascal Roger” deserve to be properly addressed during their quest for fortune.

3. Pirate-Themed Arts and Crafts
Ah, the arts and crafts—where every pirate can express their inner creativity! Set up a craft station with supplies for making pirate hats, telescopes, and treasure chests. Paper, markers, glue, and glitter are your friends. Encourage the young pirates to create their own Jolly Rogers (that’s pirate flags for the landlubbers) or design a custom treasure map. These crafty creations can become treasured mementos of your pirate escapades.

4. Pirate Feast Fit for a Buccaneer
No pirate adventure is complete without a hearty meal, so why not whip up a feast worthy of the high seas? Serve up some “Pirate’s Plunder” (fish sticks and chips), “Swashbuckler Stew” (a delicious vegetable soup), and “Buccaneer Biscuits” (soft and buttery, of course). For dessert, have a “Treasure Chest” full of assorted sweets and treats. Remember to use pirate-themed names for your dishes—“Cannonball Cupcakes” or “Sea Monster Smoothies” will make your meal that much more memorable.

5. Pirate Language Lesson
Brush up on your pirate lingo with a fun language lesson. Teach your crew classic pirate phrases like “Arrr, matey!” and “Shiver me timbers!” You can even challenge each other to speak in pirate accents throughout the day. It’s a hilarious way to get everyone into character and add a touch of authenticity to your pirate festivities.

So, there you have it—a treasure trove of ideas to make National Pirate Day a family adventure to remember. With costumes, treasure hunts, crafts, feasts, movies, and a splash of pirate speak, you’re all set for a day of swashbuckling fun. May your sails be ever full and your adventures ever exciting! Arrr!
