Traveling in December: Keeping Kids on a Schedule
By Kelsey Massey, Curriculum and Training Specialist for Childrens Lighthouse Franchise Company   •   December 16, 2024

The holiday season is here, and for many families, December means traveling! Whether you're visiting loved ones, heading on a winter adventure, or just getting away for a change of scenery, traveling with children can be both joyful and challenging—especially when it comes to keeping their routines intact. While schedules may bend, maintaining structure can help kids feel secure and keep those seasonal meltdowns at bay.

At Children’s Lighthouse, we believe in fostering a consistent, loving environment for children where routines and balance are key. That philosophy doesn’t stop when you’re on the road. Here are some practical tips for keeping kids on a schedule while still enjoying all that holiday travel has to offer.

Stick to Familiar Routines Where Possible

Kids thrive on consistency, so bring aspects of their everyday routine into your travel plans.

     • Morning and Bedtime Rituals: If you start your day with a story or sing a bedtime song at home, keep that going while you’re traveling. Bring their favorite books or comfort items (like a blanket or stuffed animal) to make new places feel more familiar.
     • Meal and Nap Times: Try to stick as closely as possible to their regular eating and napping schedules. Even if you’re out and about, a quick snack and a stroller nap can go a long way.

At Children’s Lighthouse, we create predictable daily schedules to build confidence and comfort in children—something you can mirror while traveling!

Build in Downtime During Your Travels

The hustle and bustle of airports, road trips, or crowded holiday gatherings can be overstimulating for young children. Make time for quiet breaks to help them recharge.

     • Plan short rest periods during the day, even if it’s 20 minutes of quiet play or listening to music.
     • If staying in a hotel or with family, designate a "calm space" where kids can relax away from the noise.

Use Travel as an Opportunity for Learning

At Children’s Lighthouse we emphasize learning through exploration, and traveling is a wonderful time to nurture that curiosity!

     • Create Mini-Adventures: Talk about the new places you visit—"What kind of animals live here?" or "How does this place feel different from home?"
     • Involve Kids in Planning: Let them help pack their bag, choose snacks, or pick a new toy for the trip. This keeps them engaged and excited.

Stay Organized (for Them AND for You!)

Travel is much smoother when everyone knows what to expect:

     • Create a basic daily itinerary to share with kids so they know what’s coming next (e.g., breakfast, car ride, nap time, playground stop).
     • Bring travel “kits” with activities, snacks, and comfort items. Think coloring books, puzzles, or tablets preloaded with games and stories.

A well-prepared plan mirrors the intentional organization that Children’s Lighthouse educators bring to their classrooms.

Focus on Quality Time and Flexibility

While structure is important, the holiday season is also about making memories. Don’t stress over perfection—if schedules shift, that’s okay! Focus on the time you’re spending together.

     • Make small moments count: share stories, play games, and laugh together.
     • Celebrate the unique experiences travel brings, from seeing new places to reconnecting with family.

Why Routine Matters: A Balanced Approach

At Children’s Lighthouse, we emphasize the importance of balance—providing structure while nurturing the joy of exploration. Routines help children develop a sense of security, confidence, and predictability in their lives. Even on vacation, these small routines help children feel at ease and more willing to embrace new experiences.

By blending familiar structure with flexibility, you’ll create a travel experience that’s enjoyable for everyone—one that keeps meltdowns to a minimum and fun at the forefront.

Happy Travels, Happy Holidays!
This December, give your family the gift of meaningful moments and the comfort of routine, no matter where your travels take you.
