Skin Care with Children

It's summer time! That means outdoor fun with family and friends and lots of time in the sun.  This is great for quality time with your children but it's important to protect your family's skin from harmful UV rays. Studies have proven that prolonged childhood exposure to the sun increases the risk of developing skin cancer later in their lives.  Here are some key ways in keeping the fun but maintaining quality skin health in our children.

Wearing protective, lightweight clothing is a great way to shield against the sun outside.  There are lots of options in fabric that are breathable but add an extra layer of protection from harmful UV rays. Hats and sunglasses are also super effective in deterring the consequences of sun exposure.  If you're going to be out in the sun for extended amounts of time, try to avoid the peak hours of sunlight in the middle of the day from about 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  These are the times when the UV rays are most intense.
Sunscreen is a key part in summer skin care.  The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that children wear sunscreen that is SPF 30 or higher.  SPF is related to both the amount of exposure to the sun and time spent.  These are important things to consider when figuring out the degree of SPF and when to reapply.  It is generally recommended to reapply sunscreen every two hours or immediately after swimming.  It is also proven that lotion is more effective than spray sunscreen.  It is most successful in achieving full and even coverage.

While these tips can help fight against harmful UV rays, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants six months and under should avoid prolonged sun exposure as much as possible as they are more vulnerable to damages to rays.  With all of these facts and strategies in mind, you can successfully maintain you and your child's skin health while still having great summer fun!
