Spring Cleaning with Young Children
By Lee Anne Wardwell, Curriculum and Training Specialist for Childrens Lighthouse Franchise Company   •   March 3, 2025

At Children’s Lighthouse, we believe that everyday family tasks can be transformed into opportunities for growth and connection. Spring cleaning is no exception! Including young children in your seasonal chores not only lightens your load but also teaches responsibility, teamwork, and the importance of a clean, organized space. With a little imagination and patience, you can make spring cleaning a fun family activity that even the youngest members will enjoy.

Additionally, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry notes that involving children in chores from an early age can boost self-esteem, responsibility, and the ability to handle frustration and delayed gratification. These skills are crucial for overall cognitive and emotional development. (aacap.org)

Begin with Age-Appropriate Chores for Young Children

Children love to feel helpful. With tasks suited to their age and abilities, they can successfully participate in spring cleaning. Here are some age-based ideas:

18 months-3 years old:

  • Picking up toys and books.
  • Wiping surfaces with a damp cloth.
  • Sorting items into bins by color or type.

4-5 years old:

  • Dusting low surfaces with a microfiber cloth.
  • Helping to water plants.
  • Emptying small wastebaskets into a larger trash bag.

5-6 years old:

  • Sweeping with a child-sized broom.
  • Helping to organize drawers or shelves.
  • Assisting with washing windows or mirrors using a spray bottle with water.

Tips for Making Spring Cleaning Fun

1. Turn on Music: Create an upbeat cleaning playlist to keep the energy high.

2. Use a Timer: Challenge your child to complete a task before the timer goes off. This adds excitement and a sense of accomplishment.

3. Make it a Game: Turn chores into a scavenger hunt (“Can you find all the red toys?”) or make it a race (“Who can pick up the most blocks in 2 minutes?”).

Teach as You Clean

Spring cleaning is a perfect opportunity to teach valuable lessons:

  • Decluttering: Explain why you donate unused items to help others.
  • Organization: Show them how to group similar items together to find things easily.
  • Cleanliness: Teach the importance of keeping their space tidy for safety and comfort.

Keep Expectations Realistic

Remember, young children are still learning. Their idea of "clean" may not meet your expectations, and that’s okay! Focus on their effort and celebrate small successes. Your positive reinforcement will encourage them to keep trying.

Including young children in spring cleaning not only lightens your workload but also strengthens your bond as a family. At Children’s Lighthouse, we believe that life’s little moments are the building blocks of character and growth. By involving your child in these everyday tasks, you’re teaching skills and values that will last a lifetime. Happy cleaning!
